‘Music is the expression of ideas greater and more profound than any in the visible world; ideas which centre, indeed, in Him whom Catholicism manifests, who is the seat of all beauty, order and perfection whatever.’
St John Henry Newman of the Oratory
Sacred music plays an important part in our liturgical celebrations as all who come here to worship in faith are invited to join their voices in the offering of the One, True, Sacrifice of praise ‘in the presence of the angels’.
Over the years a rich liturgical and musical tradition has been established but it is one that always needs strengthening and reinvigorating with people who wish to use their singing or musical gifts to help the whole community give glory to God.
If you are interested in getting involved in liturgical music of the parish, here are the two main ways that you might do so:
i) The Sunday Mass 9.30 a.m. choir and musicians. This choir is made up of young and old that reflects the makeup of the congregation. Mass settings and hymns are both ancient and new, providing a broad musical repertoire for the congregation to participate in. If you are interested in participating in this choir or play a musical instrument please contact Raphaela Derrick at raphaeladerrick@gmail.com
ii) The choir at the 11.30 a.m. Solemn Mass is led by Jeanne Holland-Young. It is an adult, mixed voice choir whose repertoire extends from Gregorian chant and polyphony to contemporary Mass settings and motets. Being able to read music and/or some experience in choral singing are advantages but not necessary.
If you would like to become involved in the music at this Mass please contact Jeanne Holland- Young at jholland@hollandyoung.idps.co.uk
‘The musical tradition of the universal Church is a treasure of inestimable value, greater even than that of any other art. The main reason for this pre-eminence is that, as a combination of sacred music and words, it forms a necessary or integral part of the solemn liturgy.’
The Constitution on the Sacred Liturgy – Vatican II
An 18 stop organ was designed and built by Robin Jennings specifically for Our Lady of Lourdes. It was installed in December 2010 to serve the liturgical needs of the parish and ensure the centrality of music in our parish.
In December 1917, at the invitation of Fr O’Grady, the Sisters of Mercy, opened their convent in Cambridge Park, the stables being converted into a temporary Church.
Later, the foundation stone of Our Lady of Lourdes Wanstead was blessed by Arthur Doubleday, the then Bishop of Brentwood, in July 1927.
The Church has been sustained by the people of God here in Wanstead for 100 years. Long may the faith continue to grow and thrive here.
