8th Station – The Cyrenean helps Jesus
We adore you O Christ and we praise you.
Because by your Holy Cross you have redeemed the world.
As they were leading him away they seized on a man, Simon from Cyrene, who was coming in from the country, and made him shoulder the cross and carry it behind Jesus.
St Luke’s Gospel 23:26
Reflection
We are told by the Evangelists that a man named Simon of Cyrene was called on to assist Jesus to carry the cross. Who was he? We don’t know but he was an onlooker and plucked from the crowd to carry out this task. He represents anyone willing to help others in times of distress and need. Jesus, you permitted Simon, an unknown man, to help you in your time of need. Give me the strength to reach out to others like he did, no matter what colour, class or creed. Help me to respond generously to the call to serve my brothers and sisters, who may be in need or struggling. Help me not to pass on the other side.
Lord Jesus Christ, crucified and risen, help us to follow you faithfully.
