Stations of the Cross – 2nd Station

2nd Station – Jesus prays in Gethsemane

We adore you O Christ and we praise you.

Because by your Holy Cross you have redeemed the world.

Then Jesus came with them to a plot of land called Gethsemane; and he said to his disciples, “Stay here while I go over there to pray”. He took Peter and two of the sons of Zebedee with him. And he began to feel sadness and anguish.

Then he said to them, “My soul is sorrowful to the point of death. Wait here and stay awake with me”. And going on a little further he fell on his face and prayed. “My Father”, he said, “if it is possible, let this cup pass me by. Nevertheless, let it be as you, not I, would have it.” He came back to the disciples and found them sleeping, and he said to Peter, “So you had not the strength to stay awake with me for one hour? Stay awake, and pray not to be put to the test. The spirit is willing enough, but human nature is weak”.

St Matthews Gospel 26: 36-41

Reflection

Lord Jesus, at the Agony in the Garden you suffered greatly. You sweated blood for sinful human kind. And you prayed to the Father, “Not my will but yours be done”. Your disciples fell asleep. We pray Lord, that when things go wrong, when life is hard, when we feel heavily burdened and weighted down, when things do not make sense any more, that we may find through you the strength to carry on, and trust in you and in the Father’s love. Help us to know and believe you are always with us in joy and sorrow.

Lord Jesus Christ, crucified and risen, help us to follow you faithfully.
